Overview

Six days and five nights is the honest Zhangjiajie–Chongqing split: three nights in Zhangjiajie (two Wulingyuan park days, then Tianmen) and two nights in Chongqing. The train rides on the Tianmen afternoon. Wulingyuan, Tianmen, and the glass bridge are separate tickets. Fly into Zhangjiajie Hehua (DYG) and out of Chongqing (CKG). Private custom, no shopping stops. Guided days $180–$380 per person (2026, 2–6 travelers). The trip quote is on request.

Key takeaways

  • Six days and five nights splits as three Zhangjiajie nights and two Chongqing nights. Two of the Zhangjiajie nights are in Wulingyuan; the third is in the city, so Tianmen starts at the cableway.
  • Wulingyuan is the pillar park. Tianmen is a separate mountain by the city. The Grand Canyon glass bridge is a third ticket, and the first thing to drop.
  • Zhangjiajie West to Chongqing East takes about 2 to 3 hours. On a 23 October 2026 snapshot the fastest listed was 2 h 02 min. Chongqing West and North on that snapshot ran about 3 h 20 min to 4 h 24 min.
  • Two Chongqing nights cover Liziba, the Yangtze cableway, Hongyadong after dark, and hotpot. They do not cover Wulong, Fenghuang, or a Yangtze cruise.
  • A guided private day for 2–6 travelers sharing a vehicle sits at $180–$380 per person (2026), international flights excluded. This page has no package price.

Planning advice

A Zhangjiajie and Chongqing itinerary in 6 days and 5 nights is one nature block and one night city. Give Zhangjiajie three nights: two full days in Wulingyuan for the sandstone pillars, then Tianmen Mountain on the morning you leave. Give Chongqing two nights for Liziba, the river cableway, Hongyadong after dark, and one real hotpot. The high-speed train sits on the Tianmen afternoon. It is a travel afternoon, and it is the wrong place to bolt on Fenghuang, a Yangtze cruise, Guizhou, or Wulong.

China Travel X plans this as a private custom trip or a small group that is your own party, with no forced shopping stops. Flights, hotels, and train seats can sit inside the journey. We are not an online ticket shop. Village nights after the pillars are a different week: the Zhangjiajie and Guizhou private trip. Pandas and teahouses on the Chengdu side of Chongqing are the Chengdu and Chongqing itinerary. Where a week like this sits inside a first China trip is on How many days in China.

The sample below flies into Zhangjiajie Hehua (DYG) and out of Chongqing Jiangbei (CKG). Nature first, city last. The reverse is the right shape when the flights are already the other way around. It spends the park buffer at the end of the week.

Key Takeaways

  • Six days, five nights, split by city. Three nights in Zhangjiajie, two in Chongqing. Two Zhangjiajie nights are in Wulingyuan. The third is in Zhangjiajie city, so Tianmen starts at the cableway.
  • Three places share the Zhangjiajie name. Wulingyuan holds the pillars. Tianmen is a separate mountain by the city. The Grand Canyon glass bridge is a third ticket. A first visit needs the first two. The bridge can go.
  • Use the right stations and the train is about two to three hours. On a 23 October 2026 timetable snapshot, Zhangjiajie West to Chongqing East started at 2 h 02 min. Other East arrivals that day mostly sat between about 2 hours and 3 hours. Chongqing West and Chongqing North ran about 3 h 20 min to 4 h 24 min.
  • Chongqing is the night, and it is a staircase. Two nights cover Liziba, the Yangtze cableway, Hongyadong after dark, and hotpot. They do not cover Wulong.
  • Private pacing is how this stays off the shopping circuit. A guided private day for 2–6 travelers sharing a vehicle is $180–$380 per person in 2026, international flights excluded. The six-day quote is on request.

Who this is for

  • Travelers who want the Avatar pillars and a city that stacks itself over two rivers, in the same week
  • People who can walk boardwalks, stairs, and a cable car
  • Couples, families, and parties of about 2–6 who want the car and the day to belong to them
  • Open-jaw flights into DYG and out of CKG
  • Planners who already know a Beijing–Xi’an–Shanghai arc is a different week. Day counts for that arc live on how many days in China

Who should skip it

  • Anyone with only two free days. That is a Tianmen snapshot, or a Hongyadong evening. It is a different trip from this one.
  • Travelers who dislike heights, cliff paths, or cable cars. Both halves of the week include them.
  • People who want village nights, silverwork, and a slower mountain town. That second half is Guizhou, on the Zhangjiajie and Guizhou nature route.
  • Anyone whose list still includes the glass bridge, Fenghuang (凤凰), Wulong, and a cruise inside these same six days. Fenghuang is a Hunan town on a different road. Wulong is a seventh day out of Chongqing. A Yangtze cruise is its own journey.
  • Travelers comparing this with the cheapest nature coach. A low seat fare often hides a tea, silk, or jade stop. Read private China tour vs group tour before you treat the two quotes as the same product.

Trip character: pillars first, then a stacked city

Zhangjiajie (张家界) is the quiet half, in the way a park is quiet. Wulingyuan is a UNESCO sandstone landscape: pillars in mist, eco-buses between viewpoints, and days that go well when you pick two angles and leave a famous extra behind. The photograph people mean by Avatar mountains is here. Tianmen Cave is a different rock face, closer to town, on a long cableway. Treating them as one gate is how a six-day trip loses a day in the car.

Chongqing (重庆) is the loud half, and it earns that at night. The city sits where the Jialing meets the Yangtze. Streets stack. A door at street level can open onto a floor that is nowhere near the river. The pictures that travel are Hongyadong (洪崖洞) lit over the Jialing, the Line 2 train through Liziba (李子坝), and the Yangtze River Cableway. The meal that belongs here is beef-tallow hotpot, often in the nine-grid pot (九宫格). Two nights are enough to feel the shape of the place. They are a short stay, and a karst park does not fit inside them.

Do the pillars first. Park days need legs and a weather buffer, and those are worth having before the stairs and the chilli. End in Chongqing, eat late, and fly from CKG. The nature context is the Zhangjiajie hub. Chongqing beside Chengdu, with pandas on the other side, is the Chengdu and Chongqing private loop. If this week is one block inside a longer China trip, start from the China hub.

Zhangjiajie days: Wulingyuan, then Tianmen

Sleep in Wulingyuan (武陵源) for the park days. Sleep in Zhangjiajie city the night before Tianmen. Hehua Airport (DYG) is by the city, so Day 1 is the ride out to Wulingyuan and a short walk if the light is still good. A late landing is an arrival day. It is not Yuanjiajie.

AreaWhat you came to seeWhere you sleep
Wulingyuan / the national forest park (武陵源)The pillars: Yuanjiajie (袁家界), Tianzi Mountain (天子山), Golden Whip Stream (金鞭溪). The Bailong Elevator (百龙天梯) is inside this park.Wulingyuan. Two nights in the sample.
Tianmen Mountain (天门山)Tianmen Cave (天门洞), the city cableway, the long stair if you walk it.Zhangjiajie city, the night before.
Grand Canyon glass bridgeA glass walk at Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon (张家界大峡谷).Another ticket and another transfer. Drop it when the first two days already included heights and queues.

Two park angles, and the second one has to be different. The first park day is the high viewpoints: Yuanjiajie and Tianzi, the Avatar ridge. The second is the lower angle: Golden Whip Stream, or a ridge you did not stand on the day before. Eco-buses inside Wulingyuan are part of the day. So are real-name timed tickets. Park prices move, so this page does not keep a yuan table. The useful booking is the day you will actually walk.

When fog, a queue, or a tired knee shows up, the glass bridge is the first cut. Tianmen is the second, and only when the afternoon train is the thing you cannot miss. Keep the second Wulingyuan day. The pillars are why the week starts at DYG.

Tianmen Cave, Heaven’s Gate, glowing through mist on a limestone peak, with cliff vegetation and fog at the arch
Tianmen Cave (Heaven’s Gate), above Zhangjiajie city. Separate mountain, separate ticket, separate morning from Wulingyuan. Same photograph as the Zhangjiajie and Guizhou guide.

On this six-day pair, Tianmen shares a calendar day with the train. Be at the cableway when it opens. Route guides put Zhangjiajie West about 20 minutes from the lower cableway station, and Wulingyuan about 40 km and 50 minutes from that same station. That gap is why the sample sleeps in the city the night before. Those times are planning figures from transfer guides, and your hotel gate can move them.

Chongqing days: two nights in a vertical city

Two nights cover the Chongqing people came for. A day trip does not fit beside them.

Liziba. Line 2 runs through floors six to eight of a residential tower. The viewing platform is outside the fare gates: leave by Exit 2 and follow the signs for 观景台. You can watch the train without a metro ticket.

The Yangtze River Cableway (长江索道). Tickets are sold same-day through the official WeChat account and come with a queue number. A one-way ride from the south bank is usually the shorter wait.

Hongyadong after dark. Entry is free. A paid "fast pass" is not the official door. When we checked for the Chengdu and Chongqing itinerary in early October 2026, the lights were set at 19:30–23:00. On public holidays the roads around the complex have gone under traffic control from 16:00, and the place has hit capacity limits. Use the metro: Xiaoshizi on Lines 1 and 6, or Linjiangmen on Line 2. If the interior is packed, watch from Qiansimen Bridge (千厮门大桥) or the Jiangbei bank.

Hotpot. Chongqing’s table is beef tallow and chilli, often the nine-grid pot. Ask for 微辣 (wēi là, mildly spicy), or a split yuanyang pot (鸳鸯锅), unless you already know how hot you want it.

Stairs. Kuixing Building (魁星楼) is the local example of an address that only makes sense in three dimensions: a street door can sit many floors above the river. Rolling suitcases lose that argument. Ciqikou (磁器口) is a pleasant old-town walk when the flight on the last morning is late. It is a poor trade for a Wulingyuan day.

A seventh day, if you have one, is Wulong Karst, from Chongqing. Since the Chongqing–Hunan high-speed line opened on 27 June 2025, the fastest trains from Chongqing East to Wulong South (武隆南) take about 35–40 minutes, and you still need a coach and a park shuttle after that. That day sits outside these five nights. The longer Chongqing pacing, including Wulong, is on the Chengdu and Chongqing itinerary.

Sample: 6 days, 5 nights

Primary sample: Zhangjiajie first, Chongqing last. Land at DYG. Leave from CKG.

DayNightWhat the day is for
1WulingyuanLand at Zhangjiajie Hehua (DYG). Road transfer to Wulingyuan. Hehua is the city airport, so this is a luggage ride, long enough that a late landing should stay an arrival day. Walk if you still have light.
2WulingyuanWulingyuan angle one: Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain. Bailong Elevator if the queue is sane.
3Zhangjiajie cityWulingyuan angle two: Golden Whip Stream, or a ridge you have not already seen. Afternoon transfer to the city. Glass bridge only if both park days went cleanly and someone still wants the height.
4ChongqingTianmen in the morning from the city cableway. Afternoon train Zhangjiajie West → Chongqing East. On the 23 October 2026 snapshot, G2446 left Zhangjiajie West at 15:54 and reached Chongqing East at 17:59 (2 h 05 min). A train in that window is the one that fits Tianmen. Check in and eat.
5ChongqingLiziba, the cableway, the stair streets, Hongyadong after dark, hotpot.
6Fly CKGMorning is a buffer. Ciqikou only if the flight is late enough to allow it. Leave Wulong off this day.

That is three Zhangjiajie nights (two in Wulingyuan, one in the city) and two Chongqing nights. The park-ish time is Day 2, Day 3, and Tianmen on the morning of Day 4.

If the flights run the other way

Fly into CKG and out of DYG when the ticket is already booked that way, or when you are already in Chongqing after a Chengdu and Chongqing week. Keep the same nights: two in Chongqing, then three in Zhangjiajie. The park buffer moves to the end. Tianmen then shares the last morning with a DYG flight, which is how the cave gets missed. On a forced reverse, drop the glass bridge and keep two Wulingyuan days.

Getting between Zhangjiajie and Chongqing

Board at Zhangjiajie West (张家界西) and Chongqing East (重庆东). Direct high-speed trains on this line arrive and leave at Zhangjiajie West. The older station spelled simply Zhangjiajie (张家界) is a different building. Chongqing has several stations, and the same train boarded at Chongqing West or Chongqing North is a longer ride, because those stations are not where the fast line begins.

A China Railway Map timetable snapshot dated 23 October 2026 showed:

  • Zhangjiajie West → Chongqing East. Fastest listed: G2426, 08:52–10:54, 2 h 02 min. G2446, 15:54–17:59, 2 h 05 min, which is the afternoon shape the sample uses after Tianmen. Other East arrivals that day mostly sat between about 2 hours and 3 hours.
  • Chongqing East → Zhangjiajie West, same snapshot. Fastest listed: G2439, 18:54–20:56, 2 h 02 min. A 12306 English-site result for travel on 14 October 2026 (searched 6 October) showed East departures from 2 h 06 min (G2445, 09:52–11:58) to about 2 h 53 min.
  • Chongqing West or Chongqing North. About 3 h 20 min to 4 h 24 min against Zhangjiajie West on that 23 October snapshot. Jiangbei Airport station (江北机场) also had a slower direct. Pick the station from the hotel and the clock, and read the departure name on the ticket.

The corridor is about 440 km between Chongqing East and Zhangjiajie West. Second class was listed at CNY 246 on gaotie.cn timetable pages for directs such as G2446, before a 12306 discount. The 14 October 12306 sample showed discounted second-class fares from Chongqing East around CNY 190–230, all marked down, so the full fare sat higher. Discounts move. Read 12306 for your date. A brochure that says "about three hours" matches a slower Chongqing East train. It overstates the fastest East trains, and it is the wrong figure if the ticket says Chongqing West or North.

Book with your passport on 12306, or have the seats held inside the journey. A route guide citing the 12306 help center in October 2026 put internet presale at 15 days, including the day of purchase. Confirm that window on 12306. Around the first week of October and Chinese New Year, buy the day sales open. If the automatic gate does not read a foreign passport, the staffed gate does.

After you get off. Chongqing East opened with the Chongqing–Hunan high-speed line on 27 June 2025, in the Chayuan area of Nan'an. Route guides citing Chongqing government notices put it on Metro Line 6. A Yuzhong or Jiefangbei hotel is still a change on the metro, or a car across the hills. At the Zhangjiajie end, transfer guides put a car from Zhangjiajie West to Wulingyuan at about 30–40 minutes (roughly 26–32 km), and the lower Tianmen cableway at about 20 minutes and 9 km. Show the driver 张家界西站, and 武陵源 or 天门山索道下站 for the hotel. 张家界站 is the older city station.

Airports. In on the primary sample: Zhangjiajie Hehua (DYG). Out: Chongqing Jiangbei (CKG). Hehua sits by the city, so the Wulingyuan hotel is a road transfer you should treat as Day 1, with luggage. CKG to the hotel depends on the district. Build that ride into the morning you fly.

240-hour visa-free transit. If your passport is on the eligible list and you are flying on to a third country or region, Zhangjiajie Hehua and Chongqing Jiangbei are both ports for the policy. The National Immigration Administration announcement of December 2024 puts the whole of Hunan and the whole of Chongqing Municipality inside the permitted areas, and it allows cross-province travel inside those areas. Hunan’s own note lists Hehua among the ports. The 240 hours start at 00:00 the day after you arrive. A six-day trip can sit inside that window, with little slack if a flight slips. Country lists change. Confirm them on the NIA and on our visa and entry page before you buy the flights.

Pay, then get online. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before a park gate asks for them, and carry a little cash for a stall. Every traveler on a China Travel X private journey can choose a complimentary eSIM: 10 days / 3 GB or 15 days / 5 GB. Maps, 12306, and the WeChat ticket accounts need it from the first afternoon.

When to go

April to May, and September to November, are the weeks that suit both ends of this route. Zhangjiajie is green in spring and usually clearer in autumn. Chongqing is warm, humid, and walkable outside the worst of the heat.

July and August stack two problems. Zhangjiajie gets storms. Chongqing’s government posted high-temperature alerts in late July 2026, with forecasts of 40–42 °C in many districts. If summer is the only window, start the park early, keep Chongqing afternoons indoors, and leave Hongyadong until after dark.

The first week of October, and Chinese New Year, are when the train and the park quotas fail together. Hongyadong has hit capacity limits on National Day evenings. Book the train when 12306 opens, and keep half a day of slack in Wulingyuan. Fog can close a viewpoint on a ticket that is still valid. That slack is why the glass bridge stays optional.

Winter is quieter. Wulingyuan walkways ice up, and Chongqing’s river fog sits on the night photos. It can still be a good private week when mist is the point of the trip.

What private pacing buys

The train itself is bookable on a passport. A private day earns its cost on a short list of messes:

  • Three tickets that are three places. Wulingyuan, Tianmen, and an optional glass bridge, in your passport names, on the days you walk.
  • The station on the ticket. Zhangjiajie West or the older Zhangjiajie station. Chongqing East, West, or North. A driver at the right door is the difference between an evening in the city and an hour you did not plan.
  • Luggage on stairs. The sample changes hotels three times: Wulingyuan, Zhangjiajie city, Chongqing. A roller bag and a child feel every one of those. The car absorbs them.
  • A hotpot you can finish. A bilingual escort orders 微辣 or a split pot, and says an allergy in Chinese.
  • One open jaw. DYG in, CKG out, hotels on the useful side of each transfer, held as one journey.

The day does not include a tea shop, a silk room, or a silver stop written in as culture. If a seat fare is low because the afternoon is blank, assume the afternoon has a counter. How to read that kind of quote is in how to avoid shopping-stop tours and private vs group.

For 2026, guided private days are planned at $180–$380 per person per day for 2–6 travelers sharing the driver-guide vehicle, excluding international flights. Two people sit toward the top of the band. Four to six usually sit lower when hotels stay mid-range. That is how we talk about a day. It is not a retail price for these six days. The quote is on request, for the route you actually want: which park angle, whether Tianmen stays, and whether anyone needs the elevator more than the long stair.

Send dates, the airports you already hold, headcount, and whether cable cars are acceptable to Plan or WhatsApp +86 177 2263 6816. Email g9355080@gmail.com when the flights exist and you want the days built around them. Route shapes are on journeys.

FAQ

How many days do Zhangjiajie and Chongqing need together?

Six days and five nights is the honest pair: three nights in Zhangjiajie and two in Chongqing. Two of the Zhangjiajie nights are in Wulingyuan, for two different park angles. The third is in Zhangjiajie city, so Tianmen is a morning and the train is the afternoon. Two Chongqing nights cover the night city. Wulong, Fenghuang, Guizhou, and a Yangtze cruise need more days, or a different trip.

Is Wulingyuan the same place as Tianmen Mountain?

No. Wulingyuan is the UNESCO pillar park: Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain, Golden Whip Stream, and the Bailong Elevator. Tianmen Mountain and Tianmen Cave sit by Zhangjiajie city, on their own cableway and ticket. The Grand Canyon glass bridge is a third ticket. Stay in Wulingyuan for the park days and in the city the night before Tianmen.

How long is the train from Zhangjiajie to Chongqing?

About two to three hours from Zhangjiajie West to Chongqing East. On a 23 October 2026 timetable snapshot the fastest listed was 2 hours 2 minutes, and an afternoon train used in this sample, G2446, took 2 hours 5 minutes (15:54–17:59). The same corridor via Chongqing West or Chongqing North was about 3 h 20 min to 4 h 24 min. The older Zhangjiajie station is not the high-speed stop. Recheck 12306 for your date.

Where should I stay on the Zhangjiajie nights?

Wulingyuan for the two park days. Zhangjiajie city the night before Tianmen, because the cableway is in town and Zhangjiajie West is about 20 minutes from it, while Wulingyuan is closer to 50 minutes away. Hehua Airport is by the city, so the first afternoon is a transfer to Wulingyuan.

Can I add Fenghuang, Wulong, Guizhou, or a cruise to these six days?

Those are different trips. Fenghuang is in Hunan, on a different road from this train. Guizhou village nights are the Zhangjiajie and Guizhou private trip, usually 7–9 days. Wulong is a sensible seventh day from Chongqing East, about 35–40 minutes to Wulong South plus a coach. A Yangtze cruise does not fit inside these five nights.

Can I do Zhangjiajie and Chongqing on 240-hour visa-free transit?

If your passport is eligible and you are flying on to a third country or region, you can enter at Zhangjiajie Hehua or Chongqing Jiangbei. December 2024 NIA lists put all of Hunan and all of Chongqing Municipality in the permitted areas, with cross-province travel inside those areas allowed. The 240 hours start at 00:00 the day after arrival. Confirm the current country list with the National Immigration Administration before you book.

Does China Travel X add shopping stops on this route?

No. The trip is private custom, or a small group that is your own party, with no forced shopping stops. Flights, hotels, and train seats can be arranged as part of the journey. This is not an OTA checkout. WhatsApp +86 177 2263 6816, email g9355080@gmail.com, or chinatravelx.com/plan. Pricing is on request. A guided private day is planned at $180–$380 per person (2026, 2–6 travelers sharing the vehicle), excluding international flights.
