High-speed rail east. The afternoon belongs to the new city.

Night views and hotpot. The stairs are part of the place.
Day 6–7
One of Leshan, Sanxingdui, or Wulong, then fly out. Skip this block if five days is the trip.

Do both: five days covers Chengdu and Chongqing (three days in Chengdu, two in Chongqing), six to seven with Leshan, Sanxingdui, or Wulong. High-speed trains from Chengdu East take about 1 h on the fastest runs and 1 h 15 min–2 h on most. Pick Chengdu alone for pandas and teahouses, Chongqing alone for night views and hotpot. For a first trip to China, 10–14 days on the ground is the sweet spot. Seven days works for two cities; 21 days is a deep regional add-on, not “see everything.” Private 7/10/14-day routes cover Beijing–Xi’an–Shanghai plus optional Chengdu or Zhangjiajie.
