Tourist Visa (L Visa)

Most leisure travelers apply for an **L (tourist) visa** at a Chinese visa center or embassy. Typical requirements:

• Passport valid **6+ months** beyond return date
• Completed application form and photo
• Round-trip flight booking or itinerary
• Hotel confirmations matching your stated route
• Proof of funds (bank statements vary by consulate)

Processing: **4–7 working days** standard; express available in many cities. Single-entry 30-day stays are common; request duration that covers your full loop plus buffer days.

Tibet Autonomous Region

Foreign visitors cannot enter TAR without:

1. **Tibet Travel Permit (TTP)** — 15–25 working days via licensed agency 2. **Licensed guide and approved vehicle** for most routes 3. **Matching hotel list** on the permit itinerary

Alien Travel Permit (ATP) adds **$30–$70** for Shigatse and Everest corridor extensions. Book permits **before** flights—airlines may deny boarding without TTP copies.

Xinjiang & Western Routes

Standard tourist visa holders access most Xinjiang destinations without a separate regional visa. Expect **more frequent ID checks** and occasional detours near border counties. Carry printed passport and visa pages.

Self-drive rental requires a **Chinese license**; most independent travelers hire drivers (¥600–¥1,000/day).
