Overview

Zhangye Danxia — the Rainbow Mountains — is 张掖七彩丹霞, the colourful-hills park about 40 km west of Zhangye. Sleep one night in town, spend 3–5 hours on the park shuttle, and keep the day inside a private Lanzhou–Jiayuguan–Dunhuang or longer west-China route. Published admission from 5 January 2026 is ¥70 per person; the sightseeing bus is a separate ¥38 on the 2023 municipal notice. Check both on the day.

Key takeaways

  • Zhangye Danxia, the Rainbow Mountains, means 张掖七彩丹霞: about 40 km west of Zhangye city, inside the UNESCO Global Geopark, a different place from south China’s Danxia World Heritage sites.
  • Plan 3–5 hours on the park shuttle and its four ordinary platforms. The sunset crowd gathers at 七彩虹霞台. Skip Golden Week if you want space at the railing.
  • From 5 January 2026 the published admission is ¥70 per person per visit. The sightseeing bus is a separate ¥38 on the 2023 municipal notice. Check both on the day.
  • One night in Zhangye covers the hills and the Giant Buddha Temple. Two nights if you want morning and evening light. The day belongs on a Lanzhou–Jiayuguan–Dunhuang line.
  • June–September usually holds the strongest colour. Rain can deepen the stripes; midday sun flattens them. Autumn gates can close before a late sunset.

Planning advice

11 min read

The hills in the photographs are Zhangye Danxia (张掖丹霞). The gate you buy is 张掖七彩丹霞, the Colourful Danxia scenic area about 40 km west of Zhangye city, on the line between Linze and Sunan counties. Give the park 3–5 hours on the shuttle. On a private trip, plan one night in Zhangye and set it inside a Lanzhou–Jiayuguan–Dunhuang run or a longer west-China loop.

China Travel X builds this as a private custom or small-group day: your own car, your own clock, no shopping stops. Trains, flights, and hotels can sit inside the journey. We are not an online ticket shop.

What Zhangye Danxia is

Zhangye’s colourful hills are the core scenery of Zhangye UNESCO Global Geopark, designated in 2020. Folded sandstone shows as stripes of red, ochre, cream, and grey-green. The municipal scenic-area page puts the visitor core at about 4 square kilometres inside a scenic area of about 50, with Linze county town roughly 20 km to the north. From the boardwalk you are looking at that core.

This is a different place from the South China Danxia World Heritage sites (Langshan, Danxiashan, and the other southern parks). Those are another rock story, in another province. Searching “Danxia” and booking the southern parks will not get you these hills.

Binggou Danxia (冰沟丹霞), the window-lattice cliffs further into Sunan, is a second landscape with its own gate. It is worth a second Zhangye day if you have the car and the weather. It uses a different gate from the colourful-hills shuttle.

The city stop that pairs cleanly with a night in town is Giant Buddha Temple (大佛寺), in Zhangye itself: a Western Xia temple with a large indoor reclining Buddha. It is an hour in the old town, before or after the hills. It fills an hour in town around the park day.

When to go

Colour is usually strongest from June through September. A shower can deepen the stripes. A high midday sun flattens them toward grey. The hours that repay the drive are the first part of the morning and the last stretch before the gate closes.

The gate has to still be open when that light arrives. For 28 April–31 August 2026, the Linze county notice set opening at 05:30 and closing at 19:00, with ticket sales on the same clock. The longer deep tour stops taking entries at 18:00. Those hours follow the sun, and they move. A September 2026 report of the park’s own notice set 1 September–31 October at 06:30–18:00, with deep-tour entry ending at 17:00. In autumn the gate can shut before a late sunset. Treat every seasonal table as a snapshot. Check the week you travel on the park WeChat account “张掖七彩丹霞旅游景区”, or call the number on that notice, 0936-5623666.

Golden Week (1–7 October) and the Labour Day week fill the sunset railing. If the colour is why you came, pick another week. Winter can be clear and quiet, and the day is short — confirm the winter gate before you promise anyone a sunset. The wider calendar for this part of China is in best seasons for Qinghai and best time to visit China, and what a private trip costs. Qinghai’s lake months and Zhangye’s colour months overlap in summer. A January week in Beijing is a separate trip.

How many days, and a sample private flow

Time on the groundWhat you can honestly do
Same day, no night in ZhangyeA rushed shuttle if the train is kind. You get the midday hill, or you miss the gate.
1 nightThe usual private insert. Arrive, sleep in town, one park session of 3–5 hours, leave the next morning.
2 nightsMorning light and a sunset return, or a spare if the weather sits on the hills. A second calendar day is another ticket.
4–6 daysLanzhou, Zhangye, Jiayuguan, Dunhuang, before you add Qinghai or Xinjiang.
18–28 daysThe full west loop. Zhangye is one colour day inside it. See planning an overland China journey.

A seven-day Beijing–Xi’an–Shanghai trip does not have a spare day for Gansu. Day counts for the whole country are in how many days in China.

One night, the flow we actually run

BlockWhat happens
Arrival afternoonHigh-speed train into Zhangye West (张掖西). Private transfer to a hotel in town. Giant Buddha Temple if the light for the hills is already gone.
Park session3–5 hours at Colourful Danxia. In the long summer window, leave town so you are on the shuttle while the light drops. The car stays for the ride back. Agree that return before you walk in.
Next morningWest toward Jiayuguan (嘉峪关), or back to Lanzhou if Zhangye was the add-on. Dunhuang is the following day when Mogao is on the list. It is a timed cave ticket and a different booking — the lead time is in the overland guide.

Two nights is the photographer’s version: one session for morning, one for the last light, and a weather spare between them. The published fares are per visit. Budget a second admission and a second shuttle ticket, and confirm both at the window.

Put Zhangye on a private route

Getting there and the park itself

Rail. The Lanzhou–Xinjiang high-speed line stops at Zhangye West. Look up the actual train on 12306. The fast services and the slower ones are not the same afternoon. The west station is not the hotel, and the hotel is not the park.

Air. Zhangye Ganzhou Airport (YZY) is a regional field. Many private itineraries still enter through Lanzhou (LHW) or leave through Dunhuang (DNH), We book the flight when it belongs on the journey.

The drive. The colourful hills are about 40 km west of the city. You need a private transfer or a taxi. Build that drive into the light plan. For sunset you have to be inside before last entry, not pulling up as the gate clock hits closing. Arrange the car back to town before you go in. After the last shuttle, hoping for a random taxi at the gate is how people miss dinner.

Tickets, as published. Check the day you go.

ChargePublished rateWhere it comes from
Scenic-area admission¥70 per person per visit, from 5 January 2026 (previously ¥54)Zhangye Development and Reform Commission, policy reading of 11 July 2025
Sightseeing bus¥38 per person per visit, from 1 April 2023Zhangye DRC notice 张发改价格成本〔2022〕24号, still marked in force

The ¥70 is the gate ticket. It does not include the bus. The ordinary platforms sit on a one-way park shuttle, so the bus is how you see them. Concessions for children, students, older visitors, disabled visitors, and serving or retired military follow national and local rules. Bring the passport you travelled on and ask at the window: a lot of discounts are checked against a Chinese ID card. Hotel rates and taxi fares move with the day. A private journey is quoted for your dates.

Four platforms, one shuttle. The ordinary circuit stops at 七彩仙缘台, 七彩云海台, 七彩锦绣台, and 七彩虹霞台. A longer deep tour adds further stops, including the earth-forest side, which is why that entry closes an hour before the gate. The boardwalk road is for the park bus. You ride it and get off at the platforms.

The railing that fills for the last light is usually 七彩虹霞台. Arrive earlier than that last hour, or take the morning at 七彩云海台, when the stripes are quieter. Midday, even on an empty deck, washes the colour out. Stay on the boards. The slope is a protected hill, not a place to climb down for a closer frame.

Passport and payment. Have the passport in your hand, not in the hotel safe. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before a west-China gate. A little cash still helps when a window is having a bad card day. On a China Travel X private journey, each traveler receives one complimentary China eSIM: 10 days / 3 GB or 15 days / 5 GB.

How Zhangye fits a private Silk Road trip

Zhangye is a colour day on the Hexi corridor, between Lanzhou and the desert at Dunhuang. The sequence that respects the map is Lanzhou → Zhangye → Jiayuguan → Dunhuang, or the reverse if you fly into Dunhuang and ride the corridor east.

Jiayuguan is the Ming fortress at the western end of the wall, a stop of its own. Dunhuang and the Mogao caves come after that, on their own timed ticket. The stitching — buffer days, which way you face the corridor, when Qinghai altitude has to come first — is the subject of planning an overland China journey. The route framework, without a package price, is Gansu, Qinghai, and Xinjiang overland.

If the trip continues onto the plateau, read best seasons for Qinghai before you lock a Zhangye sunset against a same-night arrival in Xining. If it continues into Xinjiang, the decision is first-time Xinjiang and the shorter Xinjiang overland route. Someone who wants the wheel should read driving across western China before they rent anything in Lanzhou. The regional page is the Gansu hub; Qinghai and Xinjiang have their own hubs at /destinations/qinghai and /destinations/xinjiang.

What we leave off the day: a jade stop, a tea shop, a “free” silk showroom between the station and the park. Stalls at the gate are ordinary commerce. Buy something or walk past. They are not on the plan.

A private west-China day is quoted per route. The band we already publish for a shared driver-guide is $180–$380 per person per day (2026, two to six travelers, international flights separate). A Zhangye night inside a longer journey sits in that band, on request. Ask for a range for your dates.

Ask us to sketch the day

The Zhangye days that stay with people are the ones that protect the light. A service-area stop between Lanzhou and Dunhuang produces a pale hill. A night in town, a car that is still there at closing, and a shuttle that reaches the ridge before the sunset crowd, produces the stripes in the photographs. If the dates fall on Golden Week, we will say so before we draw the day.

Send the dates, the party size, and whether Zhangye is one night or part of a Hexi or west-China loop. WhatsApp is on this page. Email works as well: g9355080@gmail.com. You can also start from Plan. We come back with a route and a range for those dates. Flights and hotels can sit inside the journey when you want them handled.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Rainbow Mountains in China?+
They are Zhangye Danxia, specifically 张掖七彩丹霞, the Colourful Danxia scenic area about 40 km west of Zhangye in Gansu. The hills are the core of Zhangye UNESCO Global Geopark, designated in 2020. They are not the South China Danxia World Heritage parks.
How many days do you need in Zhangye?+
One night is enough for the colourful hills plus the Giant Buddha Temple in town, with 3–5 hours in the park. Two nights if you want both morning and sunset light, or a weather spare. A same-day stop off the train usually means midday light or a missed gate.
How much is the Zhangye Danxia ticket in 2026?+
The Zhangye Development and Reform Commission adjusted scenic-area admission from ¥54 to ¥70 per person per visit from 5 January 2026. The sightseeing bus is separate: the 2023 municipal notice set it at ¥38 per person per visit and was still marked in force. Both are published rates — confirm them on the day, including any concession you hope to use.
What time should I go for sunset at Zhangye Danxia?+
In the 28 April–31 August 2026 window the gate ran 05:30–19:00, so a late session can meet the last light. The crowd collects at 七彩虹霞台. Be on the shuttle before that final hour, and have the car arranged for the ride back. Outside summer the gate moves earlier — a September 2026 park notice was reported as 06:30–18:00 — and can close before sunset. Check the week you travel.
How do I get from Zhangye to the Rainbow Mountains?+
High-speed trains on the Lanzhou–Xinjiang line stop at Zhangye West. Zhangye Ganzhou Airport (YZY) is a regional field with a thin schedule. The park is about 40 km west of the city, so you still need a private transfer or taxi from the station or hotel. Arrange the return before you enter. The park shuttle only runs inside the gate.
Can I combine Zhangye Danxia with Dunhuang and Jiayuguan?+
Yes. The sensible order is Lanzhou, Zhangye, Jiayuguan, then Dunhuang, or the reverse if you fly into Dunhuang. Zhangye is one night. Jiayuguan is its own stop. Dunhuang and the Mogao caves need their own timed ticket. That chain is about 4–6 days before you add Qinghai or Xinjiang.
Does China Travel X book the train and the hotel?+
Yes, as part of a private custom or small-group journey. We can hold flights and hotels inside the same plan. We are not an online ticket shop, and there is no fixed Rainbow Mountains package price. Share dates and party size and we quote a range for that route.
Is a Zhangye day a shopping-stop tour?+
No. China Travel X plans private custom trips and small groups with no shopping stops. Stalls at the park gate are ordinary shops. They are not a scheduled stop on the way back to town.
