Overview

A private multi-province road framework across Gansu, Qinghai, and Xinjiang. Longer than a Xinjiang-only loop, with buffer days built in. Not a fixed package.

Who this is for

  • Travelers who want the Hexi corridor, the Qinghai plateau, and one Xinjiang half in a single overland shape
  • People who can give the route 18 to 28 days, a private driver or a qualified self-drive plan, and several buffer days

Who this is not for

  • First-time visitors who only have 10–14 days for Xinjiang — that is the Xinjiang Overland Route
  • Anyone hoping to add a full Tibet rail exit by default — that permit trip stays separate

Highlights

westoverland

Three provinces, not a longer Xinjiang week

The Xinjiang card is one region in 10–14 days, north or south. This card is the stitch: Gansu, then Qinghai, then Xinjiang, in 18–28 days. Driving days stay human. Plan four to six buffer days across the trip. A Tibet permit and rail exit is a different journey, not the last week of this one. This page does not list a price.

What you can change

  • Where you enter and leave: the Dunhuang side, Xining, or Ürümqi
  • A private driver, or self-drive — the driving guide covers the permit and the fuel reality
  • Which Xinjiang half closes the route — not both north and south
  • The Qinghai season: lake months, or a colder shoulder
  • How many buffer days you will actually keep

Route outline

A framework for pacing—not a fixed schedule or package inventory.

  1. Opening block

    Gansu

The Hexi corridor and Dunhuang. Mogao needs a timed ticket. This is not a photo stop on the way to the next province.

  2. Middle block

    Qinghai

Xining and the lake country, paced for altitude. Which month works is in the Qinghai seasons guide.

  3. Closing block

    Xinjiang, one half

North or south, not both. The first-time Xinjiang guide is that decision. Fly one long leg if the road days are already full.

  4. Buffer

    4–6 days

Weather, road works, and a flight that moves. They are part of the framework, not spare time for a fourth province.
