Overview

Plan six to seven days for a first Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong itinerary: travel one way (CAN→HKG or HKG→CAN), keep three stops a day as a ceiling, and treat Hong Kong immigration as a separate system from mainland China. Five days is a taste; eight days is for Macau or theme-park add-ons. China Travel X: private custom, no forced shopping stops; pricing on request.

Key takeaways

  • Six to seven days is the comfort default for Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong together; five days is a taste; eight-plus is for add-ons.
  • Travel one way with open-jaw flights so you never ride Guangzhou–Shenzhen twice.
  • Guangzhou = food and old Canton; Shenzhen = new city and bay; Hong Kong = harbour, Peak, English-friendly transit.
  • Trains are short (GZ South–SZ North from ~29 min; West Kowloon–Futian ~14–24 min on rails) but immigration buffers are not.
  • HK→mainland→HK is not 240-hour visa-free transit — confirm NIA rules for your passport.

Planning advice

Short answer: plan six to seven days for a first Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong itinerary if you want one full food day in Guangzhou, a modern Shenzhen day, and two nights in Hong Kong without living out of a suitcase. Five days can taste all three cities if you accept one travel half-day and fewer anchors. Eight days adds Macau, Chimelong, or a bay beach — optional, not the default.

The three cities sit on one high-speed and metro corridor, but they are two immigration systems. Hong Kong clearance is separate from mainland China. China Travel X builds this as a private custom or small-group route with no forced shopping stops. We can hold hotels and trains inside the journey; we are not an OTA. The short Guangzhou–Shenzhen block is already mapped in our Guangzhou Shenzhen itinerary. Border mechanics live on the Hong Kong–Shenzhen day-trip Guide. This page is the three-city shape: how many days, which direction, and when DIY stops being fun.

Key Takeaways

  • Six to seven days is the comfort default for Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong together. Five days is a taste; eight-plus is for add-ons.
  • Travel one way. Fly into Guangzhou (CAN) or Hong Kong (HKG), leave from the other end. Sleeping "where hotels are cheapest" often means riding the same train twice.
  • Guangzhou is food and old Canton; Shenzhen is new city and bay; Hong Kong is harbour, Peak, and English-friendly transit. Do not try to "complete" any of them.
  • Trains are short; immigration is not. Guangzhou South–Shenzhen North from about 29 minutes; West Kowloon–Futian about 14–24 minutes on the rails — then add station and border buffers.
  • Hong Kong → mainland → Hong Kong same trip is not 240-hour visa-free transit. Confirm your passport on NIA and our visa page. China Travel X: private custom, no shopping-stop coaches.

How many days for Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong

Direct answer: give the trio six or seven full days on the ground. That is enough for two Guangzhou days (dim sum, Chen Clan or Shamian, Pearl River night), two Shenzhen days (one tech/creative, one bay or Nantou), and two to three Hong Kong days (Peak, harbour, one neighbourhood or Lantau). Count days you are sightseeing, not the calendar day of a long-haul arrival.

DaysSplit (nights roughly)Best for
52 GZ + 1–2 SZ + 1–2 HKTight taste of all three; one anchor per half-day
6–72–3 GZ + 2 SZ + 2–3 HKFirst leisure trip; open-jaw flights
8+7-day core + Macau / Chimelong / east SZ coast / FoshanFamilies, foodies, or fair spillover

If you only have two or three days, drop Hong Kong nights and use our Guangzhou–Shenzhen itinerary plus a single border day from the border Guide. If scenery is the point, pair this city block with Guilin later — do not stretch Greater Bay sightseeing into a mountain week.

Which direction: Guangzhou → Shenzhen → Hong Kong, or reverse

Pick the direction from your flights, not from Instagram.

Flow A — Guangzhou → Shenzhen → Hong Kong (west to east)

Best when you land at Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN) or start after Canton Fair / CIFF days in Pazhou. Sleep Guangzhou first for food, take the high-speed or intercity train to Shenzhen, then cross into Hong Kong and fly out of HKG. Luggage moves with you once; you never ride Guangzhou–Shenzhen twice.

Flow B — Hong Kong → Shenzhen → Guangzhou (east to west)

Best when you land at Hong Kong International (HKG) with easy English signage on day one. Cross into Shenzhen (Futian Spur Line, Lo Wu, Shenzhen Bay, or West Kowloon HSR — match port to district), then continue west to Guangzhou and fly out of CAN or SZX. Watch the visa pattern: Hong Kong → mainland → back to Hong Kong is not 240-hour transit. If you must re-enter Hong Kong at the end, you need another valid basis (visa-free list, visa, or other port rules). Details and port hours: Hong Kong–Shenzhen border day trip.

Open-jaw rule

Fly into one airport and out of another whenever ticket prices allow. Backtracking to the first airport burns a half-day and a hotel night you could have spent on the Peak or on yum cha.

Sample 5-day flow (tight)

Use this only if the calendar is fixed. Keep three stops a day as a ceiling with parents or kids.

  • Day 1 — Guangzhou. Land CAN. Afternoon: Shamian Island (沙面) walk. Evening: Pearl River lights or early night. Sleep Liwan / Yuexiu or near a metro that reaches Guangzhou South or Guangzhou East.
  • Day 2 — Guangzhou food + hall. Morning yum cha. Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (陈家祠) if open (often closed Tuesdays — book via the museum WeChat and bring the passport you reserved with). Evening train toward Shenzhen; sleep Futian or Nanshan.
  • Day 3 — Shenzhen. One theme only: Huaqiangbei / creative tech (Shenzhen first-timers), or Nantou + OCT-LOFT, or Shenzhen Bay. Do not stack east and west districts.
  • Day 4 — Cross to Hong Kong. Morning buffer for immigration. Afternoon: Star Ferry and Tsim Sha Tsui promenade or a short Central walk. Sleep Kowloon or Hong Kong Island.
  • Day 5 — Hong Kong highlight, then fly. Victoria Peak (go earlier than you think), or Lantau / Big Buddha if that is your one ask. Airport Express to HKG.

Sample 7-day flow (comfort default)

  • Days 1–2 — Guangzhou. Day 1 soft landing and Shamian or Yongqingfang. Day 2 Chen Clan + river or Canton Tower area at dusk. Optional Pearl River cruise once.
  • Days 3–4 — Shenzhen. Day 3 Futian skyline / Lianhuashan or a guided tech morning. Day 4 Nanshan creative, Shekou food, or bay park. See Greater Bay leisure 2–3 days for the private short-break framing.
  • Days 5–7 — Hong Kong. Day 5 harbour and Peak. Day 6 neighbourhoods (Central–Sheung Wan, or Kowloon street food) or Disneyland for families. Day 7 buffer / shopping you chose / fly out.

Reverse the same blocks for Flow B. Fair buyers: keep fair halls on separate days and treat this leisure Guide as the free days — see Canton Fair 2026 buyer travel.

Trains, borders and apps

Guangzhou ↔ Shenzhen

  • Guangzhou South (广州南) → Shenzhen North (深圳北): high-speed, fastest about 29 minutes. Guangzhou South sits far south of old Canton — add 30–45 minutes by metro.
  • Guangzhou East (广州东) → Shenzhen Station (深圳站 / Luohu): intercity, fastest about 57 minutes on the timetable pattern used since late 2025; lands next to the Lo Wu border.
  • Guangzhou East → Futian (福田): useful for Futian hotels.

Book with the passport you travel on (12306 or your planner). Full station notes: Guangzhou Shenzhen itinerary.

Shenzhen ↔ Hong Kong

  • MTR land ports: Lo Wu ↔ Luohu (Dongmen side); Lok Ma Chau Spur Line ↔ Futian CBD; Shenzhen Bay ↔ Nanshan/Shekou.
  • West Kowloon HSR: rail times to Futian about 14–24 minutes, Shenzhen North about 18–30 minutes, Guangzhou South about 47–77 minutes on published 2026 corridor guides — but arrive early for co-located immigration; ticket checks close before departure.
  • Huanggang: 24-hour passenger option after the July 2026 co-located Hong Kong Port Area opening — confirm live instructions the day you travel.

Match port to district; budget 1–2 hours each way on busy weekends. Deep matrix: Hong Kong–Shenzhen border.

Payments, maps, eSIM

  • Hong Kong: Octopus (or mobile equivalents) for MTR and many shops.
  • Mainland: Alipay / WeChat Pay after you clear; set them up before the queue.
  • Maps: Amap (English) inside mainland cities; Google / Citymapper habits work better in Hong Kong.
  • Data: roaming or eSIM. On China Travel X private journeys, each traveller can choose a complimentary China eSIM — 10 days / 3 GB or 15 days / 5 GB. Setup Guide: Alipay, WeChat Pay and eSIM.

When to go

Best windows: October–December and March–May — milder, less typhoon risk than mid-summer. Summer (June–September): hot, humid, typhoon watches; keep afternoons indoor and evenings outdoor. Fair weeks: Canton Fair spring/autumn and major furniture fairs fill Pazhou and push Guangzhou hotel rates — Shenzhen sleep + rail in is a real option (CIFF + Foshan day). Chinese public holidays: National Day week and Spring Festival mean border queues and sold-out trains — book early or shift dates.

Private trip vs DIY

DIY works if you are comfortable with 12306, metro apps, and two payment systems, and your party is light on luggage. The rails are frequent and English signage in Hong Kong is strong.

A private trip earns its keep when you:

  • Stack fair days, factory addresses, and leisure on one calendar
  • Travel with kids, parents, or samples
  • Want a bilingual escort at the border and hotel moves without suitcase sightseeing
  • Refuse shopping-stop coach circuits (see Avoid shopping tours in China and Private vs group)

FAQ

How many days do I need for Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong?

Six to seven full days is the comfort default. Five days can taste all three if you keep the schedule light. Eight or more days are for Macau, Chimelong, beaches, or Foshan add-ons.

Should I do Guangzhou or Hong Kong first?

Follow your flights. Land CAN and finish in Hong Kong, or land HKG and finish in Guangzhou, so you do not backtrack. Food-first travellers often prefer Guangzhou early; first-timers who want English signage on day one often prefer Hong Kong first.

How long is the train from Guangzhou to Shenzhen?

About 29 minutes on the fastest Guangzhou South–Shenzhen North high-speed trains, or about 57 minutes Guangzhou East–Shenzhen Station on the intercity pattern. Add metro time to Guangzhou South.

How do I get from Shenzhen to Hong Kong?

Lo Wu or Futian Spur Line by MTR, Shenzhen Bay by road, or West Kowloon high-speed rail into Futian / Shenzhen North / Guangzhou. Clear immigration on both sides. See the border Guide for hours and visa traps.

Can I visit all three on 240-hour visa-free transit?

Only with the right passport, designated ports, and a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region. Hong Kong → mainland → Hong Kong does not qualify as that transit pattern. Confirm on the National Immigration Administration and Visa & entry.

Is five days enough?

Enough for one strong highlight in each city, not enough to see any of them properly. If you want depth, drop one city or add nights.
